AUSTIN, Texas — In recent years, Texas has emerged as the second-most visited wine region, rivaling the famed Napa Valley. While California continues to dominate as the leading wine producer, the Lone Star State is carving its niche, offering something distinct that can’t be found anywhere else.
Nestled in the heart of the hill country wine scene is Coordinates Winery, a venture by Austin Kerr and his brother Mahlon, which graced Main Street in Fredericksburg just last year. Beyond the picturesque landscapes, Austin says it’s the warm-hearted community that makes this region truly exceptional.
Though the Kerrs dream of cultivating their vineyard, the challenges of maturing grapes, costs, and unpredictable weather pose significant hurdles in Central Texas. This led them to initially introduce varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and sparkling wines from South Africa, known for their crisp whites.
Wine expert Andre Boada, the founder of Vino Cadre, highlights that Texas wineries, unlike their Napa counterparts, are celebrated for their unpretentious atmosphere, welcoming everyone with open arms. Boada also emphasizes that as vines age, they develop richer flavors and characters, implying that Texas wines are poised to get even better over time. Despite weather challenges, the quality of Texas wines is on the ascent. Boada, who judges in international competitions, notes an increasing number of Texas wineries earning top accolades.
For Coordinates Winery, the pursuit of top-notch grapes takes them on a global adventure, embodying their namesake. They’re committed to bringing distinctive wines to Texas, ones that require a certain level of expertise and coordinates to uncover.
Both Boada and Austin agree that diversity is at the heart of the charm in the Hill Country wine scene. On a single block in a small Texan town, you can embark on a tasting journey through some of the finest wine regions worldwide. It’s a unique experience that’s hard to find elsewhere on the globe.
